Coca: My Unforgettable Friend
The Little Gifts of Love We Never Forget
Walk with me as I remember a very special friend who taught me about loyalty, companionship, and the simple joy of being loved. Sometimes God places unexpected gifts in our lives and sometimes they come with four paws and a wagging tail.
Story by Dr. Lana Wynn Scroggins

Some friendships enter our lives in unexpected ways. Mine began at a friend's front door with a golden retriever proudly carrying a house shoe in her mouth. I couldn't have known then how much Coca would come to mean to me or how the simple love of a faithful companion would become a source of comfort during one of the hardest seasons of my life.
When I knocked on the door, Angie greeted me with a smile. Behind her, a dog appeared, proudly carrying a house shoe in her mouth. That’s how I met Coca.
Coca wasn’t just a dog, she was family. Tom and Angie treated her like their child, and from the moment they brought her home as a puppy, Coca went everywhere with them. She made her presence known by offering a gift to every guest. That day, it was one of Tom’s house shoes, and with that sweet gesture, Coca stole my heart.
Angie explained that Coca never greeted anyone empty-pawed. A house shoe, a sock, or anything she could find, Coca always made sure to present a little treasure. As the years passed and Coca grew older, she couldn’t always tag along, especially when the weather turned hot. They’d leave her home for a few hours at a time, but Coca never missed an opportunity to share her love when I visited. Each time, she greeted me with another one of Tom’s shoes, as if to say, Welcome back, Aunt Lana.
That’s right, I became Aunt Lana to Coca. She wasn’t just a pet to me; she was family. Sometimes, when Tom and Angie went on date nights, I’d stay and babysit Coca. One of my favorite memories involved taking her to the dog park. Afterward, I’d stop at the corner just a block from their house, open the car door, and let her run home. Coca would race ahead, beaming with pride when I pulled into the driveway behind her.
Another tradition that Coca and I shared involved dinner. I’d pick up takeout from our favorite Mexican restaurant and set up in the living room. Coca knew the routine, she’d sit next to my chair, patient and hopeful. I’d feed her little bites, and when I was done, I’d say, Go to Daddy. She’d trot over to Tom for more treats, then to Angie, working her charm. Whether we ate at the table or in the living room, Coca made sure to visit everyone, gathering bits of love and food along the way.
One Easter, everything changed. I got terribly sick and ended up in the hospital with pneumonia and fluid in my right lung from cancer cells. I had surgery to place a drain and spent three long weeks recovering. During that time, Angie and Tom came to visit me. They brought a small, framed photo of Coca to keep by my bed. Angie said, Coca misses you, and she wants you to get better so you can take her to the dog park again.
That picture stayed by my side through every long night in the hospital. It reminded me of Coca’s unwavering love and loyalty. When I finally went home, I kept it on my shelf as a constant reminder of our special bond.
Coca wasn’t just a dog, she was my friend, my comfort, and a loyal companion when I needed one most. I’ll always cherish the memories we made and the simple, precious moments she gave me. Coca loved me, and I loved her right back.
Looking back, I realize that Coca taught me something profound about friendship and loyalty. Coca’s gift wasn’t just a house shoe or a bite of dinner, it was her presence, her loyalty, and her unwavering love. She taught me that being a friend means more than just showing up, it means giving of yourself wholeheartedly, expecting nothing in return. Coca may no longer be here, but her legacy of love lives on, reminding me to cherish the simple, beautiful moments and never take a friend for granted.
Take a quiet moment to remember the special friends God has placed along your path and the simple ways their love has made your life richer.
- Who has touched your life through simple acts of love, loyalty, or friendship?
- What ordinary memory with someone you love has become especially precious to you?
- Is there someone you could encourage today by simply letting them know, “I’m thankful God placed you in my life”?
Some of the greatest gifts God gives us come through the relationships that fill ordinary days with love. Coca couldn't speak words of encouragement, but she knew how to welcome me, stay close, bring joy, and simply be there.
During one of the hardest times in my life, even a little framed picture of Coca beside my hospital bed became a reminder that I was loved and missed. Sometimes comfort arrives through the simplest things.
Think about those who have brought that kind of love into your life. Maybe it was a friend, a family member, or even a beloved pet. Thank Jesus for the gift of their presence—and don't wait for a special occasion to let someone know how much their love has meant to you.
“A friend loveth at all times.”
Jesus,
Thank You for the special friends You place in my life and for the love that often comes through the simplest moments. Help me treasure the people and companions who bring joy, comfort, and friendship into my days. Teach me to love faithfully, give freely, and never take those I love for granted. And when I miss someone who is no longer beside me, help me hold the beautiful memories close with gratitude for the time and love we shared.
Amen.
The simplest moments of love often become the memories we treasure most.
